”Abraxas!” A little voice, childish and feminine, broke the silent serenity of the morning. A pup sat alone on a colorful patchwork quilt beneath an azure sky. Before her sat a newly gifted sphere of pure crystal that she had been given by her doting Roma caretakers, who said this precious treasure should belong to their precious treasure — Vesper.

Giants loomed around her, trees that seemed so tall that they could touch the sky. Then again, Vesper was rather tiny, being only a few months old, and destined to remain small in stature. Birds flitted between tree tops, chattering amongst themselves. A squirrel observed the pup curiously from a safe distance — and she was a very curious child. Ash-hued with a mask of silver, she was distinct looking, with one eye the color of a cloudless sky, the other a brilliant gold reminiscent of distant stars.

As strange as she looked, however, her appearance couldn’t compete with how odd the girl actually was. Her ears pricked as she listened to a voice no others could hear, belonging to a boy that didn’t exist — at least, not in this world. ”Moon says the only way to be good is to practice,” she explained, exasperated, as she reached a paw to touch the crystal ball protectively. "Don't be jealous - shush, I know you are! They picked me! The stars, they have decided..." She began, trying to sound sage and confident, like their mother.

Who wouldn’t want to know what fortune or misfortune awaits them? Even if she was still a fledgling soothsayer, she had been blessed with a gift, or so she was told. She was born for this. But someone seemed to think differently. Vesper sighed a noisy sigh, shaking her head as she muttered under her breath: ”Know-it-all.” But then, the young girl froze, a distant look passing her silver features.

The gears of fate were turning. Someone was near.

Ignoring the teasing of Abraxas, Vesper had no semblance of fear as she peered down the dusty old trail. The solitary pup couldn’t see who was approaching yet, only a small, dark figure walking her way, but it didn’t really matter who it was, for it was kismet that brought one wolf into the life of another, of this she was certain. And so with a bright, toothy smile, the little girl called out in a big voice, ”See into your future?”
