The city was alive, crawling with wolves and alight with an excitement that wasn’t typically to be found. His travels with the army had brought him here numerous times, but it wasn’t his home, the ground beneath his paws wasn’t his. Wolves had gathered at the announcement that the Princess needed a tutor, each one hoping for a shot at the position and the glory it would bring them. But that wasn’t why he was here. He’d heard the whispers. The whispers of an outlander dame presenting herself for the job. After four years, this was the closest he had been to finding her, to laying eyes on her. It tested his patience, to not just burn the city to the ground in search of her.

He ground his teeth together as he blended into the crowd, paying no mind to those around him. His emerald gaze was fixated on one wolf. She walked the streets without a care in the world. She carried herself with a sense of freedom, as if she believed he was forever gone from her life. Four years.. They had both grown older and it looked good on her. There was a maturity to her, a softness in her curves that had his hands itching to touch her.

His resolve to keep his distance inevitably crumbled, a bit of a surprise to himself considering he’d long outgrown his impulsive ways. He’d waited long enough. Four long years to be exact. The crowd parted for him whether they realized it or not, scrambling to get out of his shadow, out of his way. A seasoned veteran, he moved with an easy confidence and a commanding presence. Her back was to him now, she stopped to look at something at one of the store fronts. His pace was unhurried, his stride sure, he was a predator staking his prey. Salvia pooled in his mouth, his jaws aching to once again feel her scruff between his teeth.

His timing was damn near perfect as he waited for her to approach an alley, her intention to bypass the shadows. Closing the distance between them, he didn’t hesitate to press into her side, to step her into the alleys shadows as he dragged his body along her side until he could press his nose into soft curve of her throat. His touch was entirely possessive, as if he wrapped a strong arm around her waist and pulled her against him. He caged her in, trapping between his body and the alley wall. Nostrils flared as he dragged in a lungful off her lilac and vanilla perfume. He didn’t bother silencing the low groan that rumbled in his throat. “Hello, love.” The words rolled eloquently off his tongue, murmured against the shell of her ear.

The marketplace was a colorful feast for the eyes, drawing her in a she made her way through town. The events within the castle grounds had been rather taxing on her as of late. While she was determined and willing to try her best to gain such a position, there were other things upon her mind as well. Luciel had been primarily caring for their children while she traveled to and fro from the capital to their home in Yorkshire. The mother was in need of a reunion with both her beloved pups and their father and had planned a family picnic with them. That was surely the best medicine...seeing their smiling faces, hearing their giggling as she watched them play, the embrace of her mate, and the enjoyment of their usual teasing banter.

On the way to her dream afternoon, she strolled leisurely, stopping every once in a while to admire the wares of a vendor and have a pleasant interaction before taking to the main path again. Merrin hummed to herself softly, her pace picking up slightly with a spring in herself as she saw the edge of the city ahead where it led to the countryside. With eyes bright and a content smile resting gently on her maw she pressed onward, until she felt a shove to her side. "O-oh, excuse m-" She stumbled over her feet and as she righted herself, she realized she'd been pushed into an alleyway. She struggled to recover from the initial shock as the stranger continued to press up against her. "What are you-?!"

"Hello, love."

It had all happened so fast, she hadn't the chance to place eyes upon her assailant. Yet, the sound of that growl, that voice...her eyes widened in horror, her mouth running dry as her maw parted to let out a scream or a cry for help...but, it was as though the overwhelming fear had stolen her voice from her lungs. Merrin collapsed against the back wall, her entire body urging her to flee as it barely kept her standing, trembling in fear beneath the presence of his shadow. He was no longer a figment, no longer a nightmare she could wake from, he was suffocatingly real and he was here.

Her pretty lilac eyes grew wide and round, the horror on her face clearly visible, even in the shade of the alley. Her lips parted, but no sound would come, as though she was stunned into silence. Her shock was clear, like she'd spent all these years thinking he was gone, nothing but a haunting memory to plague her dreams. The humorless rumble of his chuckle was accompanied with the lifting of his lips in a smirk. Amusement danced in the shadows of his eyes, overwhelmed only by victory. She trembled against him, her fear turning her perfume sour, though she made no effort to run. Instead she collapsed against the wall, her legs barely keeping her standing. He took full advantage, using his own body to hold her up.

You are a difficult woman to find. He would tut lightly with disapproval, pulling back only enough to hold her gaze, to stare into her wide eyes. The slow burn of anger spread through his veins, tainting their reunion as he remembered her abandonment. You have some explaining to do. His voice dropped in octave, becoming deeper and rougher. His brows pulled together as his lips pursed in obvious displeasure.

He refused to give her space to breathe, he would continue to crowd her, offering her no reprieve. Her warmth was only distantly familiar, the curves of her body different now and almost foreign beneath his touch. The only thing that hadn't changed about her was her intoxicating smell. It surrounded him, dragged memories to the surface and reminded him of their past. Now that she stood here in front of him, she was living reminder of the pain she caused, the embarrassment he had been forced to endure. The hackles down his nape and back threatened to lift. Tension tightened his shoulders as he stared into her eyes, a storm raging in his own gaze.

When her legs gave out, it only gave him more invitation to press himself against her to prop her up. This put her in an even worse position than she wanted to be in, forced in between his body and a wall. Every single hair along her spine stood on end and she felt like she couldn't breathe. The memories she'd done her best to lock away came flooding back, her own body responding by making an attempt to cower. Her tail moved in between her legs, ears pinning back, as she her gaze flickered about to try to find an exit.

"N-no...no, no...Nalik, y-you can't..." Was all she could muster in the form of a whimper as she avoided looking into her eyes completely. She could recall what he had been like before, but now...she felt the anger seeping from his pores and all she could do was pray that he would not take it out on her. "Please...please don't..." She plead, shaking her head, feeling tears now threatening to spring up from the corners of her eyes.

N-no, no, no. A dark brown arched. His name rolled off her tongue, brushing passed his ears. He hasn’t heard it pass her lips in years and he was startled by the delicious shiver that raced up his spine in response. You can’t… ”I can’t what?” Dark amusement hung from the corners of his upturned lips. There was so little he couldn’t do. She avoided his gaze, her eyes nervously flickering around, searching in vain for an escape. Now that he had her back in his grasp, he wasn’t about to let her go. She cowered before him and he couldn’t help but wonder if she was remembering the beginning of their marriage, the brutality he exuded in all aspects of his life. He knew what he did to her, he could remember the bruises, the way she regarded him with caution more often than not. He didn’t deny that he had been harsh and looking back, perhaps he should have eased up on her, she hadn’t been made strong enough. It a mistake he hadn’t made with their daughter, he had made her resilient.

”Don’t, what?” She pleaded for him not to, but she wouldn’t specify what. He could guess though. Long fingers curled around her throat, flexing lightly as he held her in a featherlight touch, that wasn’t harmful so much as it was dominating. ”Don’t take you home? Where you belong.” His head would tip slightly in question. ”Don’t reunite you with the children you abandoned?” He wouldn’t, he knew his children would be full of hate. ”Or is it punishment you don’t want?” He crooned. Pausing, he’d regard her with skepticism. ”Tell me.” The deep baritones of his voice would drop, a commanding murmur. The smirk curling his lips seemed to darken as his body swelled with anticipation. He towered over her, catching sight of the tears that welled up in her eyes. While her tears did nothing to quell his anger, he has no move to escalate. He wanted an explanation first.

Her mouth moved as though she were to form words, yet not a sound slipped past her lips. As eloquent as she was, his presence alone seemed to stall the connection between her mind and her tongue. All of his horrid questions, she was able to answer within the privacy of her own skull. That's not my home! I never belonged there! Merrin's body tensed as he he square this own body over her, his domineering persona having not changed a single bit since they'd last seen one another. At the mention of her children, her wide lilac orbs finally flickered over to meet his, staring into an older version of the brute her parents had married her off to.

I didn't abandon my pups! I...I couldn't stay! She could feel him beginning to weasel his way into her conscience. The guilt she'd carried for years resurfacing along with the fear of the punishment he now so suddenly mentioned. No, no, no! Don't touch me! She recoiled and attempted to push at him to get at least the tiniest bit of distance between the two of them. Nalik had been cruel enough when she'd been obedient...what would he do in a position where she clearly defied him? He wanted some sort of explanation from her, answers to the questions that she could see, in his eyes, had driven him mad over the years. Merrin found she only had one thing to say to him and she used all of the energy and courage that she could muster to speak her truth into being, "I do not...belong to you...not anymore..."

She wouldn’t meet his gaze until he mentioned their children, but she still said nothing. He thought surely their children would garner some sort of reaction from her. Did she truly not care for her pups? The thought didn’t sit well with him. She had become a mute, frightened into silence by his presence. It was faintly amusement, but he wasn’t here to be amused. He was here to collect his wife. Tension rolled off her in waves, it was visible in the tightness of her shoulders, in the way she barely moved. It was the promise of punishment that had her moving, pushing against him in a feeble attempt to create some breathing room for herself. He refused to move, if anything, he leaned into the pressure. She’d had four years of space, he wasn’t going to give her any more.

I do not…belong to you…not anymore. For a moment, he didn’t react. He was stunned, surprised by her outburst. She had developed a backbone in her absence. His eyes narrowed ever so slightly. What was even more surprising was the sharp stab of lust that shot through his veins at her defiance. He grabbed her chin roughly, forcing her to look up at him. The low growl that formed in his throat was at odds with the dark grin that stretched across his mouth ”You will always belong to me, love.” He crooned. ”It may have taken me awhile to find you, but I will always find you.” He spoke with conviction, every word was heavy with his promise. ”You’re mine.” Unbridled possession wrapped around every syllable.

The chatter of the city faded. He paid no mind to those who walked, blissfully unaware of what was taking place in the alleyway. The entirety of his focus was on her. His eyes retraced the planes of her face, relearning each structure. He basked in her warmth of body pressed against his. He continuously inhaled her perfume, drawing it in and letting it sear his lungs. ”Don’t you think for a second I’ll ever let you go.” They had vowed till death do them part. He intended to live by that very vow.

When he forced her to look at him, she felt bile rise up in her throat. She hated every single thing about this moment. The sickening smile on his face, the way he called her 'love' with a low growl, how be pressed further against her, violating her boundaries as he had so many times before. Nalik had certainly heard what she said, but he did not listen and instead spoke as though he were reminding her...or perhaps reassuring himself of his delusion.

Merrin knew she had to put an end to it. She could not allow him to think that he could dismiss what she said and tell her who she was to him or anyone. He could not continue to drink up the scent of her fear as though it were an aphrodisiac to him. She was not the scared young woman he had continuously cornered in their home, stalking her as though he were predator and she were prey. She took a deep breath in, swallowing back her fear as best she could as she exhaled.

"You will remove yourself from me, Nalik...as I have stated previously, I do not belong to you..." She spoke firmly in a warning, her lips peeling back to show her teeth as a growl formed behind her jaws. She surprised herself with such an act, for it was one she had never in a million years imagined she would even have the slightest bit of strength to do. Merrin knew she could not stop there, not while she felt empowerment surge through her form. "And you will not speak to me as though I am your plaything...I am more than that and deserve to be treated as such."

Trigger warning: Mentions abuse

do not press this,

Her warning hung like a guillotine over them. He watched as her lips peeled back, revealing her teeth that she had never dared to use against him. She demanded that he step away from her. She again claimed that she did not belong to him. It grated against his patience, it had his anger simmering. His hackles would lift then, spiking along his nape and back, as if he needed to be appear any larger. Pale kissers peeled back, revealing his own fangs. His answering growl was louder, meaner. ”You seem to have forgotten your place.” She would continue to dig her own hole as she commanded his compliance in how he addressed her. His palm itched with the urge to strike her. I am more than that and deserve to be treated as such.

Whether he realized it or not, he would step away from her. Shaking his head slowly, his gaze wandered further down the alley. ”You’re right, you aren’t a plaything.” He’d paused, his gaze lingering on the shadows before returning to seek hers. ”You’re my wife.” His brows furrowed and for the briefest of moments, his eyes clouded with betrayal. But with a blink, it was gone. ”And you deserve to be treated as such.”

When he struck, it was with well practiced precision. There was rigid restraint in the way he grabbed her, his grasp only firm enough to keep ahold of her even though he drowned in need to grip her as tightly as he could. He pressed her into the ground beneath him, caging her in between his forelegs. ”But you forfeited that right.” He whispered into her ear. ”Four years ago.” The words dropped like stones from his lips. ”When you left me in the middle of the night. Stealing my unborn child from me.” His anger grew with every word. His voice never raised, but there was no denying the raw fury. ”When you abandoned our children without so much as a kiss goodbye.” He could still hear their cries.

His emerald eyes were bright with his fury. His body swelled with it. It dragged up memories from the early years of their marriage. It wasn’t the first time he had her pinned beneath him. But it was the first time he didn’t wrap a vicious grip around her throat. It was the first time he didn’t immediately press bruises into her skin. At least for now…

Merrin did her best to stand her ground, holding his gaze as best as she could, even when it was clear she'd struck a nerve. She watched as his hackles rose with his rising fury and when he did step away, there was the briefest moment of relief. For that moment, she thought that perhaps he had heeded her warning and actually listened to her despite him referring to her as his wife. It was shortlived, unfortunately.

Nalik rushed at her in one swift motion and she squeezed her eyes shut, flinching away as she expected him to strike her. If only she had been so lucky. Instead, she was grabbed roughly and thrown down into the dirt where he pinned her into the earth. Panic took over her, the position bed forced her into one that triggered flashes of all the times before that she had been beneath him like this forming new tears at the corners of her eyes. She could barely hear what was being growled into her ear, for sbe heard something else entirely, whispers of the memories flooding her mind.

NO! I don't want this!! Merrin started to struggle against him now, trying to free herself from underneath his dominating form. She thrashed against him, not willing to give up until she was beyond his clutches. Not again! Never again! Amid her struggles she began to cry again, although it was not simply fear, but a fury that grew within her like a hot flame. Instinctively, she let out a choked sob of a cry for help, calling out the name of the one she felt the safest with, "Luciel!!!"
