Summit Hiram Eithne

It was early morning, just before dawn, but young Summit was wide awake. An early summer storm had invaded the pleasant spring weather, and brought with it thunder and lightning. Summit had never seen a real storm before. Maybe light rain, which he didn’t much mind, but this storm was something else entirely, and wide mismatched eyes watched the mouth of the den nervously.

Each time the lightning lit up their cozy home, Summit shuddered and lowered himself toward the ground, but it was the thunder that was most troubling to the tot. And it seemed to be getting louder, and the lightning more bright, as the storm lingered on. Their parents were fast asleep, likely because of the exhaustion of being new parents, and Summit did not want to interrupt their rest because of his silly fear. Instead, he huddled closer to Journey where she was presumably still asleep.

There’s nothing to be scared of, silly goose! It’s just a storm. Storms happen, that’s what Papa said, and—

His reassuring thoughts were interrupted by a blinding flash of light, and in the same instant, the thunder roared like an angry, giant bear in the sky. A sharp cry of surprise escaped Summit as he buried his face in his sister’s fur.
