as he peered into the reflective surface of the lake he saw his past staring back at him. his scarred visage was daunting, even more so for those who have never seen such a wound he was sure. he felt the familiar stirrings of anger and resentment as he stared back at himself. his green eye glimmered with moisture until he closed it, releasing tears he didn't want to shed. sniffing quietly, he whirled away from the water and stalked towards some low shrubbery. he plopped onto the ground with an aggravated grunt, lowering his muzzle and rubbing his face against his arm to wipe away the misery that chased him today.

he knew better than to isolate himself like this, it was always when the memories came creeping in. he wished they would simply go away; but that wasn't possible. he was stuck with them forever and there was nothing he could do about it. all thanks to one heartless bastard. his stomach twisted and he curled up a little tighter, though his foreboding figure would never look as diminished as he sometimes felt. he rested his muzzle upon his paws and let his gaze drift off towards the lake. he tried to think of things that made him happy instead and as usual there was one wolf at the forefront of his mind that made him happier than anything else...

To the lake she went, for a couple of reasons. She wanted to look at the glassy surface and reflect, she wanted to think about her decision to partake in the hunts. It could cost her her life, sure, but Black enjoyed the risks associated with such events, dark or not. It excited her, truthfully, the thrill of being on the brink of death. The adrenaline would drown out the fear and instincts would take over, it was something she grew to really enjoy.

As she neared the lake, she saw for some time that she wasn’t alone, but the company of the white wolf didn’t deter her. She pushed forward, coming to the water’s edge, lowering her head for a quick drink before she turned seaglass lenses onto him. Quietly, Black dipped her head in a nod of a greeting. She moved to sit, hoping the pair could enjoy the weather together, all though he did seem a little down. Gloom hung over him like a rain cloud, but she wouldn’t judge. Instead, she was perplexed by such an emotion, perhaps she could learn from him this day. Still though, she didn’t speak a word yet, leaving it entirely up to him if he wanted to hold conversations or not.

baelfire was not alone for long, and honestly he was grateful for that.

he lifted his head to watch the other wolf approach the lake for a drink. she hadn't made any attempt at conversation with him despite having spotted him, but she also didn't look like exactly like she wasn't wanting company.

baelfire's one eye lingered on her for a few minutes before he decided he might as well go introduce himself. he could have just left well enough alone until one of them decided to leave, but he was bored and frankly a little sad so... he wanted the company. hopefully she wouldn't mind. hey there, he said from his resting place. his legs itched for him to get up and go closer, so he did.

once he was a few feet away, he slipped back into a more comfortable position. his tail even thumped on the ground behind him a couple of times in a show of friendliness. he assumed she had no interest in fighting at the very least because if she did she likely wouldn't have come to rest so near a stranger.

i'm baelfire, he said. though he had an inkling he might've actually seen her before. he squinted his eye for a second, tossing names around in his head. he couldn't be sure so he just stayed silent; if she recalled him he'd just tell the truth and admit he had a horrible memory.

The man, now known as Baelfire, did decide he would take her company. She let brilliant, seaglass lenses observe him as he came closer, offering a greeting. She dipped her head first, then fired back.
"Black."
She took note of his missing eye, and wondered what could have happened. Did he have a grand war story to tell, or a daring escape from a murderer, or perhaps none of that at all? She was curious, but she wasn’t rude. She felt like, socially, it’s a better idea to wait till one knew the other a little longer before asking such personal questions. Besides, what if it struck a cord? Or pinged a really sore nerve? She didn’t want to risk that.
"Live around here?"
She asked casually, letting her eyes shift back to the water’s glassy surface. She caught a glimpse of herself - a drone of abyssal aesthetics with striking eyes, her expression blank, bordering on stoic. But maybe a little more dead than that.

baelfire blinked as she recited her name back to him plainly. seafarer? he asked. he could have sworn he'd heard her name, hell he'd probably met her when they were children. it would make sense seeing as he knew caspian and their father's were friendly. so much so that they'd called one another brother and he'd referred to the children as 'cousin' but that had been so, so long ago.

i'm adair's boy, from edinburgh he added, wondering if that would spark anything. she had asked if he lived around her, so she obviously didn't remember him either. maybe he had the wrong girl. not like it mattered anyway, really. she didn't seem like much of a talker, but that was alright. he wasn't in the best of moods anyway so that didn't leave him feeling exactly chatty.
