he gentle touch of Gallagher’s paw on her own caused Willow to feel – she felt grateful, both happy and sad. After so many dark days, Willow finally felt alive. ”I will return, Galla. I promise.”

There was nothing more to say as both young wolves allowed instinct to guide them, a primal need neither had experienced before. Without hesitation, the wolfess surrendered herself to them, body and soul.

[fade to black…]

It was as if they had melted with each other, two becoming one for the first time – and Willow made no secret about her enjoyment, though she did try to be a little more quiet than she likely would have been. Her body came to rest with limbs still intertwined with her lover’s, and the wolfess exhaled sharply, still savoring the new sensations as another tremor of pleasure pulsed through her form like an aftershock. She was quiet for a second longer before she shited herself to look at Gallagher’s soft features again. And how could she keep from sighing a contented little sigh as she gazed at them?

”I sort of wish we had done that sooner,” she admitted with a grin before she gave Gallagher one more kiss. ”But I’m glad that – it was with you. There was no one else…” Willow peered into those stunning blue eyes again as she offered a second promise to them: ”And there won’t be.” She leaned closer to rest her dark muzzle against Gallagher’s pale muzzle.

If she tried hard enough, maybe she could pretend that this would last longer than one night, and her green eyes shut as she tried to memorize everything about this night so that it could keep her warm in the north… how Galla had responded to her touch and her sounds, how they looked at her with the azure eyes that drove her wild, as well as how they looked now, after the activity had ceased.

Of course, Willow had no intention of going to sleep anytime soon, despite how cozy she felt at rest with Gallagher. No, her heart was still beating fast, her body still flushed with heat. For beginners, it was more than a great experience.

Her voice was only a whisper again as she reiterated her truth: ”No one else but you, Galla.”

GALLAGHER BREAC

Willow’s earlier words still rang clearly in Gallagher’s mind. Her promise. Her promise to return. Tears threatened to spill over, despite the happiness that they felt at the moment. ‘It still means she has to leave — but she will return. I know she will. When all this has passed over,’ Galla thought to themselves. ‘And I will be waiting for her. If I don’t go to find her, first… Depending on how all of this goes.’

Only time would tell, if they, too, would need to leave their home in Melrose.

“I sort of wish we had done that sooner,” Willow’s voice brought Gallagher back to the present. They smiled. “But I’m glad that — it was with you. There was no one else… And there won’t be.”

“I do too, I… I should have been braver and just told you how I felt,” they said. “Instead of letting anxiety rule me. But… I… We will make things work when we can.” There was a look of determination dancing in their eyes, like fire behind the azure of their gaze. They nuzzled their own maw against Willow’s, giving a small sigh.

“Things will work out.” They pulled back slightly to look at her. They made their promise with resolve; things would work out because Gallagher would see that they did. Somehow, amongst the turmoil that was only bound to get worse.

“No one else but you, Galla,” Willow whispered. They smiled again, leaning forward to give her a gentle kiss on the forehead.

“I couldn’t agree more,” they said quietly, taking a moment to drink in her scent.

reen eyes closed lightly as she listened to the other’s gentle voice, admitting they had longed for intimacy, as well. Willow listened as Galla discussed their anxiety – which, naturally, Willow had noticed all along. Even she had been particularly shy when it came to expressing her feelings to Gallagher, despite the fact that Willow was hardly ever at a loss for words.

Her voice was soft, thoughtful as she offered, ”When I was locked up, it gave me a lot of time to think. And I realized, what matters the most is connection.” And they had certainly made a new sort of connection that night!

A small paw rose to rest against the other’s chest so that she could feel their heart beating. ”I dreamt of this, you know. Being – well, close like this. I didn’t know what it was like…” But the expression on her face still demonstrated that it was even better than she had imagined it might be.

The impending war was so silly, so pointless – and would result in so much heartbreak and devastation. But this night had nothing to do with conflict or strife. Despite what existed beyond their shared nest, Willow felt at peace, a sort of contentedness she had never experienced before.

”Things will work out.” Galla’s words lingered within her brain, something to hold onto during the cold nights ahead in the Highlands. As she met their blue sights again, Willow only nodded in response. Again, emotion threatened to overwhelm her senses. Why shouldn’t they be joyous tonight?

With a sweet kiss to her forehead, Galla agreed – which was not entirely a surprise, but was still comforting to the so-called criminal she-wolf.

Of course, neither of the pair were aware of the strange changes impacting the wolves of Rionnach – that the breeding season was still lingering beyond its usual winter confines, unbeknownst to the citizens of the lands. The idea of having pups was the furthest thing from Willow’s mind as she snuggled closer to Galla. "I love you, Galla. Let's just... be."

If only they could stay like this… but love would find a way, and their futures were destined to be bound together for the long run.

GALLAGHER BREAC

There was no more room for anxiety, Gallagher realized. Things could — and were changing — at a moment’s notice, without any regard for how lives would be impacted. They needed to get over the anxiety, and simply do, because that was the way to live with war looming in the very near future. Lives would be lost, ripped apart, and cast aside as if they had never meant anything, to begin with. And, while none of that sat right with Gallagher, they knew they could do nothing but be an unwilling pawn in the chess game that the political powers that be played — however frustrating it might be to them.

“When I was locked up, it gave me a lot of time to think. And I realized, what matters the most is connection,” Willow said, her voice soft and thoughtful. Gallagher smiled, nodding slowly in agreement.

“We’ve made one, that’s for sure,” they said with a quiet laugh.

“I dreamt of this, you know. Being — well, close like this. I didn’t know what it was like…” Galla had had dreams of it since the latter part of their travels together, and they too had not known what to expect of it… but, the pair would be in agreement in the sentiment that it was better than anything that their minds could have cooked up without knowing. They lifted their paw, placing it gently over Willow’s that rested on their chest. A smile still played on their lips.

For the time being, they could forget the looming tension of the future, and the inevitable heartbreak and world-shattering that would undoubtedly occur. Gallagher gave a small sigh. They didn’t want to think about the inevitable future right now — for now, in their quiet den, it was just the two of them.

That was all that mattered.

Everything after the break of dawn would fall into place, as long as they both held out hope and worked towards staying alive and making things be as they should be between the two of them.

“I love you, Galla. Let’s just… be,” Willow said, as she snuggled in closer. Gallagher wrapped their arms around her and buried their nose into the fur on her neck.

“I love you too, Willow,” they said quietly, giving a small, contented sigh. The future would come when it came. For now… things were perfect if they ignored the hard-to-come-to-terms-with facts that would be undeniable in a few hours when Willow would make her run to the Highlands.

For now though…

They could just be.

Oh

yes, the two had made more than mere connection that night. In a few weeks, Willow would come to understand just how… fruitful that connection had been. At the gentle touch of Galla’s paw on her cream-colored chest, Willow felt a sensation unlike those intimate moments only minutes before (though that before had been pretty fantastic). It was as if she could feel Galla inside her heart. And Willow was determined that no matter how far, she would always keep them close to her.

The she-wolf melted into Galla’s arms, something even nicer and lovelier in real life than she had dreamt. Tonight, nothing else mattered. Tomorrow, nothing else would compare. “I love you too, Willow.” Their words nearly brought her to tears, but she would save those for when she had gone away. ”I’ll never forget this night,” she said softly, barely fighting off a yawn, despite the passion she felt as the words left her tongue. And that statement was true for reasons not yet discovered.

For now, she smooshed her face up against Galla’s soft cheek, as there seemed to be little point in maintaining personal spaces after that. And while Willow was already a rather big fan of the connection they had made that night, she was too weary to attempt another round of lovemaking. She found a perfect snuggly spot beside Gallagher with a satisfied sound. "I hope you have the best sleep. You're my favorite, Galla."

The morning would be different. Before the sun even began to rise, Willow would need to go. No time to say goodbye to anyone else but the wolf that she loved. As she drifted to sleep, the wolfess wondered if there would be just enough time to steal a little more close time with Galla before her departure…
