A wild raven quorks from its perch Fearless Again
With her new family close by, and a full belly, Fern wandered among the tall grass, watching the sun set in the sky that seemed so far away. The hues of pink, purple and yellow dashed across the sky, highlighting the shapes of the clouds. Fern hummed to herself tunelessly, ambling along, swinging her legs one in front of the other, swaying wistfully in the breeze. Her heart felt strange now, somehow different from before. It was a feeling she knew she had felt once upon a time, but that time seemed so long ago, so infinitely long ago. She glanced back at the two giants that had found and fed her, and her chest tightened a little in a feeling she would come to understand was family. The gentle squeeze like a hug. Perhaps one day, her lonely nightmare would be just that, but for now it loomed threateningly on the horizon. The little girl had to keep checking to see if the others were still there, check that they too wouldn't leave her alone. I stress... I think... At Who? At You?

Summit was already a big fan of this new place, a location that his parents called A Swamp. It smelled different in A Swamp, and had different kinds of plants and critters. The best critter they had found, though, was now called Fern. The dark wolf pup looked a bit different than the rest of the family… But then, Summit and Journey didn’t look identical to either of their parents, so families could look all sorts of ways. When his family left A Swamp behind, Fern would go with them. She was to be one of them now, and while Summit would soon mostly forget a time without her, the foundling child was still a novelty to the Eithne boy. Summit was intrigued by this Fern pup, named after the place where she was found. For now, Fern was looking around, appearing distracted and unaware that the child was lurking near. It was a perfect opportunity to practice play pouncing, especially if he could be extra sneaky about it. The toddler lowered himself to the ground, picturing a victorious pounce in his mind’s eye. What followed, however, was anything but successful. ”AahHH!” His make-believe ferocious war cry came out instead as a yelp of surprise. The boy had tripped over his own oversized paws, and his attempt at a fun pounce devolved quickly into a muddy pile of pup that landed some distance from his intended target. Fearless Again
Her quiet exploration was interrupted by a loud war-cry that quickly changed pitch, preceding a wet, mushy sensation as she was covered in mud. Fern reared, flailing her front legs and letting out a mighty roar, that to any without imagination would have sounded more like a squeal. She turned her gaze on her new friend, the one who would one day be called her brother and returned the favor with a bubbling growl. She raced toward where he lay prone, mud covering his strangely colored fur, her gait halting and awkward, her overlarge ears flapping against the top of her head, her tongue lolling from the side of her mouth. A small black body landed not far from the other pup, her own splash quite a lot less exciting than the boys. Her green eyes emerged from the muck and with another delighted squeal, she scooped up mud with her front paws, aiming to dump it all on the head of her brother. The smile on her face was unmistakable, the joy in her heart warmed her against the chill of the mud. For the first time in her short life, she was experiencing what it was like to be a puppy, and she was loving it. BOLD HERE ITALIC HERE At You?

Summit was overjoyed when the new pup returned his gestures with her own youthful play. When she came closer, the boy was reminded again of their size difference. She was even smaller than Journey! As a shower of mud approached via Fern, Summit made no attempt to move away, instead pretending to be very scared. ”Nooo! Not dat, Few – Feh–” His brows wrinkled as he attempted to correctly pronounce the name given to the little girl by his family when they discovered her there in The Swamp. ”Fe– Fe–” A look of self-satisfaction and excitement appeared on his face as he announced proudly, ”Fefe!” Yes, that was quite perfect, if he should say so himself! He rose to his paws to kick a bit of mud in the girl’s direction before turning suddenly, with a dramatic gasp. ”Look awt, Fefe!” He raised an oversized paw to indicate a massive tree just ahead of them, covered in vines and moss so that it was fully decorated in green. ”I’s a – uh – a big monstow! Named… Big Meanie Tail!” If one squinted just so, and had a vivid imagination like young Summit, the tree almost did look like a huge, menacing beast of mystery. Summit lowered his front half toward the ground, into a pouncing, protective position, and he growled his very best growl at the ‘monster’ that now threatened them… sort of. ”Hey, you! Big Meanie Tail, go ‘way!” From the corner of a coral-hued eye, he glanced quickly at Fern to see if she, too, could see this so-called monster, and if she would play along with his fairytale come to life. His tail wagged expectantly, and he uttered another snarl for the mossy tree. @Fern template by bean
