H ”Hmm.” What could he do to encourage much needed rest? An idea occurred to him, causing him to hesitate as memories resurfaced. It was something his father had done with him as a pup, but for entirely different reasons than trying to lull his son to sleep. Back then, it had been training, preparation for when he would grow up to be a ruthless fighter. The voice of his sire still swirled in his head: ”You must listen at all times. Be constantly aware of your surroundings, because you do not know when an attack is imminent. You must be aware, or else…” But this was not the same, not at all. Cian smiled as he looked down at his daughter, who returned his gaze curiously. ”We’re going to play a little game. First, take a deep breath, my Sunny girl. What do you smell?” Journey took a few deep sniffs before announcing in her sweet little voice, ”Trees!” Cian nodded, grinning as he continued his instruction: ”Yes, but what else? Do you smell the flowers, the earth? ”Now look around, very carefully. Take in everything you see, every little detail. See not just the trees, but each branch. See the way the leaves wiggle in the wind?” With wide, mismatched eyes, Journey giggled as she nodded. ”Yeah! Leaves!” ”This time, close your eyes. What sounds do you hear?” A green eye and a coral-hued eye closed tightly as Journey focused on her sense of hearing. ”Birds. Wind?” Cian nodded. ”Yes! You are very, very good at this game, little one. Let’s play when your brother is awake, but for now…” As if on cue, a giant yawn parted Journey’s maw. ”Aha, I knew it. We can play again when you’re both awake. I promise.” Still reluctant, but too tired to resist, Journey made her way to her brother, settling in beside him to finally sleep. Cian followed close behind to give each pup a soft lick on the forehead. @Clover
